Triana: Sailors, Potters and Flamenco

An iron bridge across the river, a castle with a dark past, a market full of colour, painted tiles on every wall, and the flamenco of the old neighbourhood. Choose your level.

Text 1 · Across the river

Triana

Triana is a neighbourhood on the other side of the river Guadalquivir from the centre of Seville. For hundreds of years it was the home of sailors, fishermen and potters. Many sailors on the ships to the Americas came from Triana.

Today you cross the river on an iron bridge from 1852, the Triana Bridge. At the end of the bridge there is a market, and next to it the ruins of an old castle. Triana is famous for its colourful tiles, its pottery and its flamenco.

Text 2 · Our plan for Saturday

A day in Triana

On Saturday we’re going to walk across the Triana Bridge. First we’re going to visit the market and have breakfast there. Then we’re going to see the castle museum and a pottery workshop. My sister is going to buy some tiles for her kitchen.

In the afternoon we’re going to walk along Calle Betis, by the river. We aren’t going to take a taxi: it’s near. And in the evening? We’re going to listen to flamenco in a bar!
