The story

After Hesiod’s Theogony, lines 154–210

Ouranos hid his children inside the Earth; consequently, Gaia was in terrible pain. She made a sickle of grey adamant and asked her children to help her. Only the youngest, Kronos, answered.

When Ouranos came at night and lay over the Earth, Kronos struck from his ambush. The blow brought about the end of the Sky’s rule and resulted in the separation of Earth and Sky.

The drops of blood gave rise to the Furies, the Giants and the ash-tree nymphs. Ouranos called his children Titans and warned that vengeance would follow; and a long struggle ensued.

He was the first to think of shameful deeds.
