Sophia’s Visions, Part 4 · Third and mixed conditionals, wish and if only · B2

Think first. Can a person leave the faith or the customs of their family and still be a good member of that family? Who decides?

While you read, listen to the characters imagine the past differently: if he had …, he would have …. That is the third conditional, the grammar of regret.

Philo: “My brother came to the Library that day. Read what Sophia saw when he spoke about his sons, who were not even born.”

Philo’s elder brother Alexander did not often come to the Library. He was the Alabarch, one of the richest men in Alexandria, and he said that books were for people with time to spare. But that morning he arrived in a litter carried by four slaves, in a good mood, and full of plans.
