The story

After Homer’s Odyssey

In Sparta there is a wedding feast. Everybody is happy. Queen Helen sits next to King Menelaus. When they talk about Odysseus, Telemachus is crying. “Let’s drink some wine,” says Helen.

Menelaus tells a story: on the island of Pharos, he caught Proteus, the Old Man of the Sea. Proteus was very old, but very strong. He became a lion, a snake, a leopard, a boar, water and a tree. How many animals did he become?

“Odysseus is alive,” said Proteus. “He is on an island, with the goddess Calypso.” Menelaus says: “I would like to give you horses!” But horses can’t run on Ithaca: it is all rocks.
