The story

After Homer’s Odyssey

Odysseus bore the insults of the maids in silence. He had to rein in his anger. Try as he might, he could not sleep. Zeus sent thunder from a clear sky, as if to answer his prayer.

In the morning, a grinding-woman prayed that it would be the suitors’ last feast. It was none other than the prayer Odysseus had hoped for. With the exception of a few, the suitors noticed nothing.

All they did was eat and mock. Scarcely had they sat down when Athena made them laugh uncontrollably, with blood on their meat. The prophet Theoclymenus saw it and warned them, thereby making them laugh even more.
