The story

After Homer’s Odyssey

King Aeolus gave Odysseus all the winds in a bag, so that only the west wind would blow. On the way home, while Odysseus slept, his men opened the bag. By the time he woke up, they had opened it, and the storm blew them all the way back.

On the island of Aiaia lived the witch Circe. She turned his men into pigs. Odysseus had to save them. Hermes gave him a magic plant, so the magic didn’t work on him.

Circe turned the men back, and they stayed for a year. Instead of sailing home, they feasted. At last a man suggested going home. Circe said they must first go into the land of the dead. She promised to look after them, and she still helped them.
