The story

After the old stories of Heracles

The third labour was the golden hind: a deer with golden horns. It belonged to Artemis, the goddess of hunting. It was faster than an arrow. Heracles mustn’t hurt it.

Heracles ran after it for a whole year: in spring, in summer, in autumn and in winter. An old hunter told him: “I saw it here a week ago. Wait for it by the water.”

At last, in winter, the hind stopped to drink at a river. Heracles moved very quietly, and caught it. He didn’t hurt it at all.

Artemis appeared. She was angry. “I will bring it back to you,” said Heracles. “I promise.” When did Eurystheus come out of his jar? When he saw the hind, and it ran away, back to Artemis.
